Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje will voice the lead in a feature telling the story of a Middle Eastern historic figure
U.K. actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who recently joined the cast of Game of Thrones for the upcoming fifth season, used the Dubai International Film Festival to discuss his involvement in a locally made animated feature.
The Lost, Bourne Identity and Annie star will voice the lead role in an as-yet-untitled project due out next year being developed by Dubai-based animation studio Barajoun Entertainment.
“It’s a traditional Arabic folklore legend that has been forgotten but is being brought to a modern audience in a new and exciting way,” he told reporters, without revealing the subject of the story, describing him as a “real-life superhero.”
“What you will see next year is animation that is really and truly pushing the bar on many levels. It’s almost as real as it can get without being real.”
Ayman Jamal, producer and managing partner at Barajoun, said the idea was inspired by movies that focused on historic figures such as Malcolm X, Gandhi and Braveheart.

“We all watch Marvel heroes; we like them, but I feel there’s a gap in showing real-life heroes. The same way we saw Gandhi, we hope to get real life heroes to inspire the youth,” he said.
The subject of the film is said to be a slave who lived more than 1,000 years ago in the Middle East but was of African origin. The official announcement will be made in January, according to Jamal, but the clues suggest it could be Antarah ibn Shaddad, a pre-Islamic Arab hero and poet often likened to the regional Samson.
